Caritas Day, Wednesday January 25th 2023, is an MSVU holiday used to remember and thank our community for their selfless support following the fire on MSVU campus in January 1951. This fire consumed the entire building, which at the time was the entire campus including residences. With our students left with nowhere to live or study in the middle of winter, the city of Halifax graciously took our students into their homes and onto their campuses for which msvu is eternally grateful. As msvu students today, it is important to remember kind acts of others that supported us through such a difficult time.
Caritas is Latin for charity, and it is with this spirit that we observe Caritas Day. On Caritas Day, we are all encouraged to give back to our community. All acts large and small make a difference in our communities, and you never know if your act is the one that makes the day for another. No matter how you spend your Caritas Day I hope you will take a moment to reflect on community. Community matters at MSVU.
This unique MSVU celebration reminds us about MSVU’s heritage and how we plan on progressing forward towards the strategic plan. MSVU sparked a movement on female empowerment and was one of the first universities to offer higher education for women and girls in Canada, at a time when they couldn’t vote. The original purpose was to train novice and young sisters as teachers, but also recognized the need to educate younger women.
We encourage you to engage in the broader community – and obviously with the MSVU community as we celebrate the 150th anniversary from when the history started.
This could join or form a society, visit athletics and recreation, cheer on our Mystic, have a coffee and a snack at the Rook, visit the Pride Centre, and check Captain’s calendar for upcoming events.
MSVU Campus will be open, and we hope you will join us and the Bhangra Society for a dance class at 2:00 pm in the Mount Fitness Center.
The MSVU Students’ Union will be closed on Caritas Day but will reopen on Thursday January 26th, 2023.
